Gamification, games for physical activity, monitoring, quantified self, feedback, service design
The theme of this challenge is to encourage customers’ physical activity, health, and exercise outside the hospital context. Essote as a social and health care authority wants to take the responsibility for encouraging patients, clients, relatives, visitors and employees to maintain physical activity and healthy lifestyle even in their leisure time. But how to do this?
Adequate physical activity contributes to the prevention of many diseases and supports, for example, weight control. The role of health care professionals is to encourage their customers to self-reliant activity and promotion of wellbeing, but it might be difficult to implement. Everyone knows the health benefits of exercise and versatile healthy food, but this is often not enough to motivate. If we look forward to the future, monitoring your own vitals [measurements of vital functions] (e.g. sleep, physical activity, and nutrition) could become everyday habit. This information would provide a lot of opportunities for both person her/himself and monitoring purposes for health care professionals. This vision has not yet become true in practice.
In what ways can the Essote encourage their customers to actively take care of their own health after leaving the hospital? How can latest technology help? What new ideas and impulses can clients adopt here for their everyday living? What about the employees?
Approach and considerations
